Roofing and Siding in Jonestown
A small city on the north shore of Lake Travis, eight miles west of Cedar Park on RM 1431, where lots were first sold in 1939 and about one house in five sat vacant at the last census.
Houses Nobody Is In
The 2020 census counted 1,265 housing units in Jonestown and found 19.9 percent of them vacant. In a lake town that mostly means weekend and seasonal houses.
An empty house is where a small roof problem becomes a large one. A lifted shingle or a split vent boot lets water in during a storm in April, and nobody sees the ceiling until July. If you are not at the house full time, a roof and gutter check before spring and a look after any big storm is cheap compared with the alternative.
A contractor can send dated photos, which is what an absentee owner needs.
Every Age of House
Brothers Warren and Emmet A. Jones began developing the area in the 1930s ahead of the dam that formed Lake Travis, selling waterfront lots for $50 in 1939. The city incorporated in 1985 and grew from 1,250 people in 1990 to 2,365 in 2020.
That history leaves old cabins, houses added onto several times, and new custom homes on the same roads. Additions are where roofs leak: a low-slope roof tied into an older steep one, or a wall built on top of old shingles. Tell the contractor if the house has been extended.
A Different City Hall
Jonestown is its own city in Travis County. Cedar Park's rule that roof covering needs no permit is Cedar Park's. Jonestown's requirements were not read for this site, so ask the contractor to confirm with the city before work starts.
